I'm the most terrific liar you ever saw in your life. It's awful. If I'm on my way to the store to buy a magazine, even, and somebody asks me where I'm going, I'm liable to say I'm going to the opera. It's terrible. ~J.D. Salinger, The Catcher in the Rye, Chapter 3
This is Holden Caulfield from the novel Catcher in the Rye speaking on how he is a terrific liar, yet he's not proud of being so. Throughout this book you get more and more examples of Holden's terrific ability to lie. In my general opinion folks, liars are people who's experiences in life are not that interesting or at least the liars don't think so. This is why these people lie. Holden views his life in a very negative way and this could be the reason why he needs to lie so much and has seemingly perfected the "art" of lying.
It seems as if to me that Holden Caulfield is a compulsive liar, he HAS to lie. Even at times when he has no reason to lie. An Example in the main quote when he says "If I'm on my way to the store to buy a magazine, even, and somebody asks me where I'm going, I'm liable to say I'm going to the opera." A perfect example of no reason to lie at all, just lying for the sake of lying, its as if he's addicted to the lie.Sure, I believe that there are people out there like this that they cannot stop the constant lying. But, eventually this is going to catch up to them though, in the end you cant lie forever, your going to get caught. I think this will definitely happen to Holden in Catcher in the Rye and there will be consequences no dought. Kyle's advice for this blog thought...DON'T LIE, the truth is always the easiest way out.
